چکیده

PROBLEM Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer among woman. Although there is not known cure to breast cancer, it is generally well accepted that early detection is crucial for improved therapeutic outcome. While mammography has shown to be an effective means of breast cancer detection, it is not 100% accurate, and it averages a 90% detection rate of breast cancer in women without symptoms. Contrast enhanced MRI has proven to be very sensitive, but it is non-specific [1]. Clearly, a non-invasive technique that could be used to improve the characterization of breast neoplasms could prove very useful for the diagnosis and staging of breast cancers. Because of its important role in cell physiology, the sodium ion is sensitive to the metabolic changes that accompany many tissue pathologies. In particular, it has been shown that the intracellular concentration of sodium has a positive correlation with proliferative activity in a variety of human neoplasms [2]. In this work we demonstrate the feasibility of performing single and triple quantum sodium MRI in the breast in vivo. We demonstrate that images of adequate SNR and spatial resolution can be obtained in acceptable imaging times using clinical 3.0T MRI scanners.

Serial triple quantum sodium MRI during non-human primate focal brain ischemia.

Triple quantum (TQ) sodium MRI techniques with clinically acceptable 18-min data acquisition times were demonstrated in vivo in a nonhuman primate model of focal brain ischemia. Focal brain ischemia was induced in four animals using embolization coils to occlude the posterior cerebral artery, and a balloon catheter to occlude the middle cerebral artery. A statistically significant increase (P <...

Single and Triple Quantum Sodium MRI of Primary Human Brain Tumors

We demonstrate the use of triple quantum (TQ) filtered sodium MRI in a group of patients undergoing clinical evaluation for primary brain tumors. The TQ images were acquired using a twisted-projection readout in tandem with a three-pulse triple quantum filter. Our results demonstrate that TQ sodium MRI provides a source of contrast that it is not biased by the large sodium content of the extrac...

Design of a Novel Recombinant Multi-Epitope Vaccine against Triple-Negative Breast Cancer

Background: Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is determined by the absence of ERBB2, estrogen and progesterone receptors’ expression. Cancer vaccines, as the novel immunotherapy strategies, have emerged as promising tools   for treating the advanced stage of TNBC. The aim of this study was to evaluate Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), Metadherin (MTDH), and Mucin 1 (MUC-1) proteins as vaccine ...

Optimal choice of pulse phases in triple-quantum filtered sodium imaging in the presence of B0 inhomogeneities

Introduction For diagnostic purposes, in sodium (Na) MRI, the discrimination between free sodium ions and sodium ions restricted in their mobility is desirable. This restriction occurs if the sodium ions interact with macromolecular structures, i.e. in cartilage or in the intracellular compartment. One method to isolate the signal from such ions is triple-quantum filtered (TQF) sodium MRI [1,2]...

Contrast enhancement methods in sodium MR imaging: a new emerging technique

Background: In the last decade, sodium magnetic resonance imaging was investigated for its potential as a functional cardiac imaging tool for ischemia. Later interest was developed in contrast enhancement for intracellular sodium. Little success was reported to suppress extracellular sodium resulting in the intracellular sodium MRI image acquisition using quantum filters or sodium transition st...
